This workshops will take place at Studio West, 18:30-20:30, on Saturday 5th September.
Deconstructing Balanchine is a two-hour workshop exploring the hows, whys, and nuances behind the Balanchine aesthetic. Through a combination of ballet class, discussion, and practical exploration, we’ll unpack the principles that shape Balanchine’s approach to movement, musicality, épaulement, use of space, coordination, and musical phrasing—while also questioning and busting some of the myths and assumptions that often surround his work.
Nicholas Isaiah King Rose’s relationship with the Balanchine tradition began during his training at the Colburn Dance Academy, where he was introduced to Balanchine’s work under the guidance of Jenifer Ringer and James Fayette, as well as Zippora Karz of the George Balanchine Trust. During his training, Rose had the opportunity to dance selections from a range of Balanchine repertoire, including Who Cares?, Agon, The Nutcracker, Theme and Variations, and more.
Rose also studied with the late Willy Burmann, whose extensive career included work within the New York City Ballet tradition. Drawing from these experiences, Rose is now able to share the knowledge, perspectives, and nuances he encountered through his training—offering participants an opportunity to look beyond the steps and explore the ideas that make Balanchine’s choreography and technique so distinctive.
The workshop will combine traditional classwork with conversation and exploration, culminating in a dynamic Balanchine-inspired phrase. This final section allows participants to put the principles explored throughout the workshop into practice through musicality, coordination, speed, clarity, and movement.

Nicholas Isaiah King Rose
Nicolas is a Bahamian-American ballet dancer, choreographer, educator, and professional cellist. Trained at The HARID Conservatory and Colburn Dance Academy, Rose has performed internationally dancing several soloist roles with Ohio Contemporary Ballet, and Dance Theatre of Harlem, before his recruitment to the National Ballet of Canada, where he then found himself appearing in major works by renowned choreographers including Balanchine, Forsythe, Neumeier, Ratmansky, Wheeldon, and Ashton.
An internationally sought-after guest artist, Rose has performed principal roles including Solor in La Bayadère, Von Rothbart in Swan Lake, and The Prince/Cavalier in The Nutcracker. In 2024, Rose founded the King Rose Dance Collective, Germany’s first BIPOC, QUEER, FLINTA dance troupe.
As an educator, Rose has taught extensively throughout Europe, Africa, and North America, including at Deutsche Oper Berlin, Dance Theatre of Harlem Outreach, and Dance Centre of Kenya. He is also a professional cellist of more than a decade, and an international club DJ, bringing together his passions for dance, music, choreography, and education to share the art of ballet with audiences and students worldwide.
